CITY NATIONAL BANK’S PARENT COMPANY, ROYAL BANK OF CANADA, IS FUELING THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND FUNDING THE VIOLATION OF INDIGENOUS RIGHTS

Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs have opposed the fracked gas Coastal GasLink pipeline since it was proposed a decade ago, consistently refusing to consent to the destruction of their territory. Resistance is increasing as pipeline construction gets closer to drilling under their sacred river, the Wedzin Kwa, a water source since time immemorial.

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), and its fully-owned subsidiary City National Bank (CNB), is heavily invested in the pipeline. RBC is also a lead loan arranger for the project. RBC is fueling this conflict directly.

The United Nation’s Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UN CERD) has repeatedly condemned the Coastal Gaslink project, urging the Canadian government to halt the project, seek Free, Prior, and Informed Consent from the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs. Refusal to consent to construction through the 13,000-mile wide territory has resulted in multiple heavily militarized police raids, with special ops troops armed with machine guns and sniper rifles to clear the land for construction, violently arresting land defenders, elders, and journalists.

RBC has the power to stop Coastal GasLink in its tracks, before the drill goes under the river and destroys the sacred waters, which could begin at any time.

Use this tool to send a message directly to RBC & CNB executives. Tell them to stop profiting from the violation of Indigenous rights, defund Coastal GasLink and shut down the drilling now.
